PE CONCEPT of the Week: PROBLEM SOLVING (Hands) Mr Harris
The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT focus which is taught as part of the delivery of a range of sporting activities.
This week in PE, we have been focusing on the importance of PROBLEM SOLVING involves adapting to challenges, making decisions, and finding effective solutions. Whether it’s adjusting tactics in a game or refining techniques during practice, it enhances performance and resilience.
Problem solving is a vital skill in badminton, as players must assess the situation, anticipate their opponent’s moves, and make quick decisions to gain an advantage. Across all year groups, we have been challenging students to understand how to use different shots—such as clears, smashes, drops, and drives—effectively during matches. By exploring when and why to use specific shots, students learn to adapt their gameplay, selecting the best options to outmanoeuvre their opponent and win points.
At GCSE level, this approach is developed further, with students applying tactical and strategic knowledge to analyse opponents and make informed shot choices. This not only improves their technical and tactical understanding but also builds their ability to think critically and adapt under pressure, essential skills both on and off the court.
FOOTBALL
Year 7 v Reach Free (District League) AWAY Mr Harris
Date: Wednesday 27th November 2024
Result: Lost 3 – 2
Scorers: N. Cunningham (2)
Squad: C. Dias (GK), F. Murphy, R. Gurney, C. Killpack, B. Hemmings, N. Cunningham, J. Muraj, C. Vaughan, D. Hope, A. Nguyen, F. Slazak.
Commended performances: C. Dias (GK)
Comment: It was a difficult afternoon on a very cold visit to Reach Free School. After starting the game in spectacular fashion, taking the lead and doubling it early on, we found ourselves 2 – 0 up with much of the game left to play. We were still creating chances midway through he first half playing some nice football. However, as we approached halfway through the first half, our concentration slipped and we conceded two goals in the same fashion. A long ball from the midfield past our back line and slotted home past C. Dias. We came into half time 2 – 2 after our positive start. Moving into the second half, early on we failed to track our players and with too much space one of their midfielders went to the byline and with an excellent shot managed to slot it home. 3 – 2 down. We fought hard in this game, but C. Dias very much kept us in the game making several 1 on 1 stops. We were just unable to get that equalising goal. Right at the death was our best opportunity of the game which saw B. Hemmings hit the post with a header. Well done to Reach Free.
Year 7 v Robert Barclay (County Plate) HOME Mr Harris
Date: Monday 2nd December 2024
Result: Won 3 – 2
Scorers: C. Vaughan, C. Killpack, F. Slazak
Squad: F. Murphy, R. Gurney, C. Killpack, B. Hemmings, N. Cunningham, J. Muraj, C. Vaughan, A. Hodgson, D. Hope, F. Slazak.
Commended performances: R. Gurney, F. Murphy, A. Hodgson, N. Cunningham.
Comment: An excellent performance this week by the Year 7 football team, after poor weather, we travelled to Hoddesdon and played on a tough pitch in a challenging game vs Robert Barclay. Early in the game playing downhill, we worked extremely well creating several chances and it wasn’t long before we managed to score. The ball dropped from a corner and C. Killpack smashed the ball home, following this we had great success from C. Vaughan down the wing as he drove past their defender with ease in the first half, he was rewarded with a goal short after our first. We then managed to get pegged back and went into halftime, in the lead 2 – 1. In the second half, we were under great pressure throughout and we found ourselves having to defend for the majority of the half with little respite. After some resolute defending, we got a reward after some excellent link up play in midfield, F. Slazak managed to slot home through the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 3 – 1. With minutes left, our resolute defence was broken and we conceded one but it was too late and we managed to come away with a 3 – 2 victory. Well done to all, a strong and difficult performance.
GIRLS FOOTBALL

Result: Won 7 – 0
Scorers: T. Baines, M. Preston
Squad: R. Oliveira (GK), B. Fowler, T. Baines, A. McKenzie, M. Preston, J. Blowers, E. Jacks, F. Sheward, E. Bain and F. Shire
Commended performances: T. Baines, B. Fowler and E. Jacks
Comment: An excellent performance from the Year 7 and 8 girls delivering an outstanding 7-0 football victory, showcasing excellent teamwork, resilience, and communication. The improvement in communication and team cohesion can be seen by the many goals scored. Their dedication and improving strategies throughout the match highlighted their hard work, with every player contributing to a dominant performance creating memorable victory. The lead allowed the players to move around the pitch in the second half, showcasing their individual strengths and working on their weaknesses ready for the next game. A truly impressive effort by the whole team! Well done girls and thank you to Miss Ayres for your continued support.
NETBALL
Year 10 v Croxley Danes (AWAY) Mrs Cooper
Date : Wednesday 27th November 2024
Result : Lost 12-19
Squad : A.Belghirua, M.Hooper, N.Edirisuriya, H.Sookhoo, R.Chudasma, M.Rumney, H.Spendlowe
Commended performances : M.Rumney voted by the opposition
Comment : With several key players absent through illness this was always going to be a tough match for the team. Firstly, Well done to M.Hooper and N.Edirisuriya for stepping up to play in new positions to help out the team. The game started well with
Goals traded at both ends and there was some fantastic shooting from M.Rumney and H.Spendlowe. After the first half the deficit was only 3 goals and the team were really beginning to gel, however their opposition also began to find their flow and despite the best efforts of the defence they began to score more freely. Whilst B.Meads continued to work hard and won the last quarter they were unable to narrow the gap. On to the next game!
Year 9 v Croxley Danes (AWAY) Mrs Cooper
Date : Wednesday 27th November 2024
Result : Lost 9-16
Squad : M.Huryta, J.Isles, S.Verrey, A.Permeti, B-M.Barnard-Collins, Z.Chowdhury, E.Yeboah, Y.Khan
Commended performances : J.Isles voted by the opposition
Comment : After a convincing victory in their last game the year 9 team started positively with some free flowing but ‘fast-paced’ netball. It was very tight in the first quarter with only 1 goal between the teams. With a bit less speed and more composure at times there might have been a different outcome to the second quarter where CDS began to pull away. The third quarter saw BMS get themselves right back into the game levelling the score before Croxley pulled away again and then took the momentum into the final quarter to secure the victory. Some things to work on before the next match where I’m sure the team will return to winning ways.
Year 7 v RMS (AWAY) Miss Sunpongco
Date : Monday 2nd December 2024
Result : Win 13 – 9
Squad : A. Bateman, N, Mowle, E. Bain, F. Shire, L. Tokai, E. Coetzee and F. Sheward
Commended performances : POTM chose by opposition N. Mowle, POTM chosen by ASO F. Shire
Comment : The game started well with great shooting from both A. Bateman and N. Mowle from around the shooting circle. It was a consistent effort throughout the court to get the ball in the attacking end, with great communication between players and the really good use of space around the court. After the first half, the opposition started to work harder to get their center passess straight to goal but BMS defence was not letting them through, getting the interceptions and rebounds which lead to more goals. Well done girls, another great win!
Year 8 v RMS (
AWAY) Miss Sunpongco
Date : Monday 2nd December 2024
Result : Lost
Squad : L. Nathan, L. Mysiak, Z. Dunlop, E. Gillett, D. Vinoth, Y. Galapaththige, R. Hussain and S. Cerri.
Commended performances : Great performance from E. Gillett and Y. Galapaththige.
Comment : It was a tough game for the Year 8’s but the results do not fully reflect how well all players worked. It was a quick start to the game with RMS getting a 6 point lead by the first quarter. However, the next quarter BMS showed resilience and great team cohesion keeping possession for the majority of the quarter. This led to us scoring a couple of goals to start to close the gap by halftime. Unfortunately, our defence team was not quick enough to intercept some of the passess which allowed the opposition to increase that gap. It was good to see the girls work through the game and see their confidence improve no matter the outcome. Well played year 8s and we’ll get them next time!
RUGBY
Year 9 Rugby Team Trains at Saracens’ Home Ground – StoneX Stadium
The Year 9 Rugby team recently enjoyed an unforgettable experience, training at the iconic StoneX Stadium, home of the Saracens Rugby Club. This special opportunity allowed our players to step into the shoes of their rugby heroes and sharpen their skills under the guidance of Saracens’ professional coaches.

A big thank you to Saracens for hosting us, we are looking forward to the next two sessions already. The team is more motivated than ever to tackle the season ahead – go Year 9 Rugby!
