Mental Health in a Business and Economics...

Keeping in line with the Mental and Health Awareness Week, we explored the crucial role of
employers in a business to improve the mental and emotional well being of their employees. We
discussed the possible issues that could arise in a modern-day work environment. Students
contributed by discussing the aspects of a conducive working environment and majority were
unanimous in emphasising importance of team work and provision of social interaction within a
business setting. Students were comfortable leading discussion and written responses by discussing
the works of Maslow, Taylor and Herzberg and the role these motivational theorists have played and
continue to do so in improving the working environment.
Steps that a business can take to improve the emotional and mental wellbeing of its employees
could be as simple as checking in with employees, including employees in decision making processes
which are beneficial for the longevity of the business. These steps further include provision of
measures which makes the employees feel included and motivated like a fair reward system,
recognition and clear pathways for employees to progress and grow. Here are some examples of
students’ responses.
