Super Science Lessons!
It was great to walk around the science faculty earlier this week and see so many interesting and engaging lessons taking place.

In a Year 10 revision lesson, all students were engaged and revising for their upcoming Year 10 PPEs. The work was clear and resources had been provided for them. The cover teacher and Learning Assistant were supporting the students well, asking questions and using  assessment for learning to promote high engagement and progress.

The Year 10 lesson led by Head of Physics Mr Newton was covering some complex concepts related to electrons within the nucleus and the teacher was challenging the students through his excellent questioning to think deeply about the topic being covered. It was impressive to see how well the students were listening and engaged with the learning and making positive verbal contributions during the discussions.
In Ms Karunthilake’s lesson students were accessing revision materials to prepare them for their all important upcoming Year 12 Pre Public Examinations (PPEs) and end of year tests which determine whether they can continue into Year 13. The teacher was encouraging independent learning and providing feedback and direct instructions where needed to clarify any misconceptions. The students clearly value the support in place; it was an impressive lesson and we wish the students well with the test next week.
Year 12 students in Ms Atchuthan’s lesson were completing a required practical to test osmosis and were responding well to the clear instructions and feedback provided by the teacher. With her support, excellent organisation, clear instruction and ongoing assessment for learning strategies employed, students were confident of success.
In Ms Singh’s Year 8 lesson, students were provided with an activity designed to reinforce the key scientific words used in the topic being studied and were engaged in an impromptu spelling test. The atmosphere for learning was very positive and the activity supported good progress by providing an opportunity for assessment for learning to develop and strengthen subject-related literacy development.
In Ms Ali’s lesson the Year 8 students were revising for their upcoming end of year tests and had completed a quick start ‘do now activity’ based on matching key words to scientific definitions. The teacher was facilitating the lesson and answering questions and clarifying any misconceptions as required.
