The Power of Feedback at BMS
Each year we hold three Marking and Feedback Fortnights where, as a whole school, we remind ourselves of the power of good feedback and the part that it plays in supporting all students to make enhanced progress. The Education  Endowment Fund’s research indicates that good, precise feedback and clear next steps supports students to make nearly 18 months of enhanced progress throughout their time in school.
The Marking and Feedback Fortnights also provide an opportunity for all staff to see and glean best practice from across the school and use it to enhance further their pedagogy and practice.
On Monday morning in our Staff Briefing, Lead Practitioner Ms Druce and Associate Leader Mr Johnson gave some very positive feedback to all staff from our latest Marking and Feedback Fortnight – particularly highlighting the best practice seen in PE and Health and the consistent use of the coloured marking and feedback stickers all staff use to capture, written peer, self and teacher feedback as well as verbal feedback. A number of subject areas also use assessment booklets to capture feedback which were also highlighted as a very successful mechanism for effectively supporting student progress in a number of key subject areas.
Ms Druce and Mr Johnson reminded staff of the power of using a visualiser to model answers live in class – again an effective strategy and tool used by many teachers at Bushey Meads.
We continue to work hard to mark students’ work in a variety of ways and signpost those next steps for them to enhance their work and move to the next level.
