Year 9 Careers in STEM Day

We were absolutely delighted last week to welcome a number of organisations into Bushey Meads to work with our year 9 students introducing them to future possible careers in Science,Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.

Workshops covered:-

  • Forensic Science led by our own outstanding Pastoral Manager Mrs Blowers who has previously worked as a Forensic Investigator.
  • Engineering and bridge building covered by Balfour Beatty a major construction company.
  • Affinity Water ran the water challenge where students had to build a network of pipes to deliver water throughout a town.
  • INTU our local business partner talked students through Security, CCTV and facial recognition.
  • InvestIn Education talked through their Step into the future taster sessions, alongside our 6th form STEM Leader Benjamin Abrahams and Careers Leader David Ali Lauzzana delivering information around STEM career pathways.
  • The Institute of Engineering and Technology sent along two engineers to talk to students about their careers and show them how to build circuit boards.
  • Learn By Design ran 2 different workshops – one was the Bright Ideas challenge where students looked at how everything in a city could be powered in the future in 2050. The other was to build an electric car investigating the effects of powering their cars with varying quantities of electrical energy. They feel that these challenges will be solved by the ingenuity of today’s young people and hope to inspire young people about the positive role STEM can play in society and encourage students to become the engineers and scientists of tomorrow.

The day was a resounding success with students all thoroughly engaged and learning from the activities.
