Social Sciences Santa Suggestions!

The Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty would like to present some extension suggestions for all its students to enjoy over the Christmas holidays.  Do enjoy!

Business Studies

Jingle all the Way Film – for the power of Marketing

Christmas retail advertisements – Who were/are they targeting and how successful were the ads?

Retail data after Christmas/Sales – as a measure of the state of our economy/the markets

Economics

A Christmas Carol/Oliver Twist Films  – showing the impact of poverty on families.

Retail data after Christmas/Sales – as a measure of the state of our economy/the markets

Geography

Banned Iceland advert looking at palm oil (deforestation) around the world.

How far does Santa have to travel? Use to website ‘Free Map Tools’ to analyse Santa’s journey from Lapland to their home. Students can practise mapping and basic GIS tools by entering their home’s location to show Santa’s route on Google maps. Students to then write a description of Santa’s journey describing the location of countries, stating coordinates of major cities and modes of transport that could be used (other than his sleigh, of course!).

Christmas geography news
Find three Christmas and geography themed articles to read and summarise each article in five sentences, explain how the article relates to physical, human and/or environmental geography and to give their own opinion on the issues raised.

History

The Pianist (Holocaust)

Conspiracy (Holocaust)

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ (Cold War)

Bridge of Spies (Cold War)

Joyeaux Noel (WWI – Christmas Truce)

Law Watch ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ for courtroom festive film

For the non-festive films, try ‘12 Angry Men’, ‘Anatomy of Murder’ and ‘Philadelphia’ (the movie not the cheese!)

For reading – I highly recommend ‘Eve was Framed’ by Helena Kenedy and ‘How to Win Every Argument: The Use and Abuse of Logic’ by Madsen Pirie

Politics

As we move towards UK ideologies in year 12, try watching ‘The Iron Lady’ for Thatcherism and the rather dated but classic socialist film ‘A Very British Coup’

For year 13s, try ‘All The President’s Men’ about Watergate and ‘Frost / Nixon’

Psychology

Looking at the psychology of happiness, showing how close and loving relationships is more important than having an abundance of toys and presents. Relates to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs from the Humanistic Approach.

RE / RS / Philosophy and Ethics

The Wizard of Oz

The Sound of Music

The Matrix – (the first one only) and for Year 7 RE students.

Bonhoeffer – agent of grace

Sociology

Look at how Christmas is celebrated through different social times and countries by watching both ‘The Muppets Christmas Carol’ and ‘The Holiday’
