Outstanding PE Lesson
It was a privilege to watch our outstanding Head of Faculty for PE and Health Mr Cartledge teach a Year 8 lesson last week on the Astroturf. The lesson was tailored to the students and the conditions and aimed for maximum engagement from all. There was a strong link to cross curricular learning and the key concepts underpinning the inclusive PE Curriculum here at BMS.

During the lesson Mr Cartledge planned some chances for students to discuss their learning in pairs and small groups. He kept linking the lesson to the science of cardio vascular work and also to the concept of maintaining and developing a healthy active lifestyle. Students were encouraged to set their own targets and reflect back on the accuracy and appropriateness of these in terms of their outcomes. There was a real sense of competition in the interval training section of the lesson and, as the teacher, he was carefully differentiating the challenge according to ability.

Behaviour for learning was exemplary, engagement and effort were high and students responded in a very respectful and positive manner throughout the lesson. Mr Cartledge was constantly assessing the students’ work and achievement throughout the lesson and providing personalised feedback to move their attainment and progress on. All students made great progress and enjoyed the lesson – despite the cold!

Students commented that Mr Cartledge is a very motivational teacher and encourages them to be the best they can be.

It was a great way to end the day on Thursday last week.
