Join the Gay-Straight Alliance

At Bushey Meads School, we pride ourselves on creating an inclusive environment for our students. With this in mind and to celebrate Pride Month, Mrs Mateides arranged for Brionny and Sophia from Youth Connexions Hertfordshire to come to Bushey Meads School to talk to students in our Gay-Straight Alliance about creating an LGBTQ+ and Allies group in school.

Pride Month is celebrated in June as it was the month of the Stonewall riots. Pride is dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ communities all around the world. It is about coming together and teaching about love and tolerance. The dedicated GSA display board in H corridor, which celebrates LGBTQ+ celebrities, serves as a reminder and visual voice for our LGBTQ+ community.

The Gay-Straight Alliance has already started to have a positive impact in school, with the GSA designing a Theme of the Week activity that was taught to the entire Bushey Meads School community during CDC. The GSA have also arranged for posters to be displayed in classrooms around the school, looking at influential LGBTQ+ people in a range of subjects. These include Scottish-Nigerian poet Jackie Kay (English), pioneering computer scientist Alan Turing (computer science), Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (art), dancer and choreographer Maud Allan (dance) and Bishop Gene Robinson (religious education).

If you are interested in joining the Gay-Straight Alliance, please email Mr Carter at cartera@busheymeads.org.uk. Allies are welcome!
