Mr Chalkley has been busy in his workshop going above and beyond in support of our dyslexic students. He has designed and created a number of rulers for our students who have dyslexia. Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty with reading and writing as it affects areas of the brain that process language.
The coloured bar on the ruler enables some of our dyslexic students to see similarities and differences between letters and words where they would not have been able to before and removes the ‘glare’ of a white background on which most text is written. In turn, providing them with increased access to all aspects of our curriculum meaning that they are not disadvantaged in learning. Additionally, the remote learning model followed by BMS supports students with dyslexia as it sets up a routine where live-lessons mean students follow their usual time-tables and so, structures the day in clear, manageable chunks of time.
Consequently, building learners self-esteem and embracing our growth mindset culture. Supporting engagement with remote learning can be facilitated by adding coloured backgrounds to screens or placing an overlay across the computer alongside colour-coding timetables so lessons are clear at a glance and having designated work spaces with organisational systems in place.
Over the last couple of weeks, Year 8 and 9 students were invited to come along to the after school Thursday sewing workshop, to learn how to make their own tote bag. Students...
