Mr Cartledge Head of PE and Health
After the Christmas and New Year celebrations many of us have new years resolutions based around improving health and fitness. The physical and mental benefits of regular exercise are well documented and we have a range of extra-curricular sports clubs at lunchtime and after school for students to get involved in. Extra-curricular clubs will take place this half term in basketball, fitness, table tennis, netball, trampolining and football as well as after school revision sessions for our sporting qualification courses. This half term also sees a focus on competitive basketball fixtures for all year groups.
For full details of the clubs, fixtures and practices students and parents need to check on the Bushey Meads School website in the Calendar icon where you will find a full list of the extra-curricular activities. This is updated on a weekly basis to show the fixtures and practices for each week. In addition students can check the notice boards in the boys and girls changing rooms and in the main PE lobby. The provisional programme for next week is :
BASKETBALL
Year 10 Boys v Croxley Danes (District League) HOME Mr Cartledge
Date : Monday 15th January 2024
Result : Won 20-11
Scorers : K Arikat 10, M Wong 4, J Coady 2, S Patel 2, A Worth
Squad : S Patel, B Okeke, M Wong, A Worth, J Coady, S Williams, K Macfarlane-Gentles, K Pamplona, K Arikat
Commended performances : M Wong, A Worth, S Patel
Comment : The Year 10 basketball team made a winning start to the season with a deserved 20-11 win over Croxley Danes. Some strong offensive play from M Wong and K Arikat gave the boys a good platform in the first quarter and some excellent defence from A Worth and S Patel helped to protect the lead. Well done all the boys on a really positive start.
BASKETBALL
Year 7 Boys v Rickmansworth (District League) HOME Mr Cartledge
Date : Tuesday 16th January 2024
Result : Won 28-26
Scorers : E Silver 14, D Isles 6, E Rumney 4, C Allan 2, A Hussain 2
Squad : E Silver, E Rumney, A Hussain, O Phillips, C Allan, R Khebichat, G Fogden, A Tobias, J Zulberg, D Isles, R Fox
Commended performances : E Silver, E Rumney
Comment : The first basketball ma
tch of the season for Year 7 produced one of the most exciting matches played at BMS for many years. A strong start from the BMS team saw the boys move into an 8-4 lead after the first quarter. A tight second quarter followed by a strong third quarter from Rickmansworth saw the boys tied at 14
-14 moving into the final quarter of the match. The next 10 minutes produced some excellent basketball with Rickmansworth moving into a 24-20 lead with a minute left of play. Two successful free throws from E Silver brought the scores within 2 and then a shot from D Isles in the final seconds took the game to overtime. An early Ricky basket looked to have given them victory before E Silver tied the game up again and then D Isles scored the winning basket with 3 seconds left on the clock. It was great to see the team spirit in what was a great advert for school sport. Well done to all the boys involved and we look forward to the next match next week.
BASKETBALL
Senior Boys v Grange Academy (District League) AWAY Mr O’Kelly
Date : Thursday
18th January 2024
Result : Lost 20-19
Squad : K. Ford, O. Spencer, T. Sookhoo, S. Fard, M, Kabucho, S. Sullivan, J. Mortada, D. Tegzas, D. Sherlock, N. Haines, O. Appa, A. Abrahams
Comment : Whilst defending soundly throughout the game, it was a lack of coolness with the ball that ultimately cost the team the win. Initially organising themselves well the boys got out to a big lead over the opposition, but rushing possessions and silly, unpressured turn-overs gave multiple possessions to the opposition with little chance of reply. Unfortunately, with the lack of scoring in the second half and the sheer weight of scoring opportunities afforded to the opposition the game was lost.
Year 9 Boys v Westfield (District League) HOME Mr Harris
Date : Thursday 18th January 2024
Result : Won 34-30
Scorers : J. Cunningham (6), H. Wills (2), A. Yu (4), N. Konopka (8), E. Henry (2), J. Parkes (4), H. Hayward (4), H. Neal (2), H. McManus (2)
Squad : H. Hayward, H. McManus, N. Konopka, J. Parkes, J. Cunningham, A. Yu, E. Henry, K. Banfieild, H. Neal, H. Wills.
Comment : On Thursday, we had Westfield School visit us for our first Basketball fixture of this year. We came into the game following some good training sessions where the team developed some nice plays and focused on their fundaments of the game and this showed early in the first quarter as we managed to get on the board quickly and were utilising our fast break. We finished the first quarter up 10 – 4. Moving into the second, we struggled to contain their #7 and gave up 10 points in this quarter as he drove through our defence and we were unable to deal with the offensive screens being set going in at the half just ahead at 20 – 18. Into the third we lost our concentration a bit and our composure, conceding 10 points and scoring only 4. The game now sat at 24 – 28 to Westfield. Moving into the final quarter we showed up and competed well for the ball. Scoring lots of layups and chances. We managed to move the ball around well gain and ended up scoring another 10 points in the final quarter taking the final score to 34 – 30. A great win in our first game of the season and looking forward to the next game. Well done to all involved.
FOOTBALL
Year 9 Boys DISTRICT PREMIER LEAGUE 6-A-SIDE FESTIVAL @ Parmiters Mr Harris

BMS B : H. Wills (GK), L. Avci, H. Neal, F. Fowler, N. Konopka, F. Mordecai
Comment : On a brisk and cold Monday evening, we went to Parmiters School to face off in a 6-a-side tournament. We managed to take two teams to the event and contested well against some of the strongest teams in the county. We created many chances and defended resiliently throughout the tournament. In the end, a cold night but an excellent opportunity for the boys to showcase their hard work this year and all but finish the football season this year. Well done to all.

Comment : The boys started their County League campaign with a very positive 4-1 win over JFK. A strong first half where the boys played some good passing foundation saw the boys ease into a 4-0 lead. Despite missing several 2nd half chances the boys ran out comfortable winners and can look forward to the rest of the season.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Year 8 Girls District Basketball Tournament @ Queens Mrs Cooper
Date : Tuesday 16th January 2024
Result: RUNNERS UP
Squad: A.Permeti, J.Isles, Y.Khan, L.Konopka, A.Lankshear, E.Yeboah, Z.Chowdhury, A.Baliguat
WOW! What a great result from the year 8 girls to become district runners up in this year’s tournament, and what a turnaround from last year’s event where we failed to secure a victory!! The girls worked really hard in all the games, winning 3 matches and narrowly losing the other 2. Strong victories against The Grange, and Rickmansworth were only topped by beating local rivals Queens in a tight contest but one in which the result was the highlight of the day for the girls. Narrow defeats to The Reach Free and eventual winners Croxley Danes helped secure the podium place. A great evening of basketball with lots of smiles from the girls. Well played everyone.
DISTRICT SWIMMING GALA – Mrs Cooper
It was a privilege to take 4 of our talented swimmers to the District Swim Gala on Tuesday 23th January.
Swimmers: P.Tapre (yr 11) A.Pointer (yr 9) P.Soteriou (yr 8) K.Nikolov (yr8)
all swim competitively out of school for Watford and Bushey Swimming Clubs. We took the short trip to Habs boys for the students to represent the school, in a range of races, in what was a very competitive gala.
With races coming thick and fast it was an entertaining evening which really showcased the talented swimmers in the Watford District.
We had some fantastic performances with a number of PB’s achieved.
Special mention must go to our TWO DISTRICT CHAMPIONS:
P.Soteriou 50m Backstroke Junior boys
A.Pointer 50m Breaststroke Inter Girls (A special result as she was the bottom end of the age category!)
All of the swimmers performed with great levels of effort and demonstrated their competitive instincts, considering the event’s high standards, obtaining some great results.
It’s fantastic that we have this opportunity to showcase the talents of students who might not be able to participate in ‘their’ sport at school but can represent the school in this event. We hope to participate in similar events in the coming months and I look forward to hearing of any other competitive swimmers who may also be part of our school community
