As the UK celebrated BHM during the month of October, the humanities faculty played a part by tweaking our topics of study to capture key moments of Black History in the UK and around the world.
In doing so, students at various key stages were challenged to learn something new about the contributions of Black people to the reign of Elizabeth I, the British Empire and the WW1 whiles Y7 RE students had discussions based on the Martin Luther King – “I Have A Dream” speech, others at KS4 business studies researched the milestones reached by Black people in international business whereas those at KS5 studying psychology were introduced to studies relating to the prevalence of ethnicity in schizophrenia and depression, a well suited task to prepare them for their exams next summer.
As we seek to embed the recognition of BHM in our calendar for next year in order to make the celebration more relevant and engaging to students we plan to look beyond the American Civil Rights movement and to focus more on Black British History.
Some lessons and students’ work reflecting the various engaging activities have been captured on camera to share with you.
