I began organising this trip in May for students that were going to be taking GCSE or A Level dance this academic year. After the constant and helpful back and forths between myself, the ticket company, students and staff members the now GCSE and A Level Dance students traveled to Wembley Theatre on November 2nd to watch Rambert Dance Company perform their new show Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby. A Level students are expected to analyse the Rambert Dance Company history in depth and the company is also studied on the GCSE course so it was the perfect opportunity.
The show is a new dance theatre event, delving into the story of Tommy Shelby and the Peaky Blinders, written by the creator of the global hit television series. The production features the full permanent Rambert dance company on stage and a live band playing specially commissioned music and iconic Peaky tracks.
It’s so important for our students to be able to discuss and explore various dance styles and take inspiration from professional works performed in established theatres. It is a brilliant experience watching a live performance that helps to inspire ideas and provide further development of knowledge.
The students absolutely loved the show and were in awe of the dancers, set, music and portrayal of the story. The Year 12s are now creating a dance work inspired by Peaky Blinders and all students are working on choreography projects where I am certain I will be seeing many Peaky Blinders inspired moments.
The next dance trip is a KS3 trip to see Mary Poppins in the West End on the 14th December. Thanks for continuing to support the Dance Department!
