Student Engagement in Computer Science

Computer science is a very large subject with lots of applications. Computer scientists design new software, solve computing problems and develop different ways to use technology. But, whatever they’re doing, all computer scientists rely on ‘computational thinking’; and Harvey Wickham, in Year 9, has demonstrated an independant insight into computational thinking.

Over the last few weeks, Harvey has independently analysed computational & programming problems, planned out solutions and understood how a computer processes information.

Harvey initially started by completing the mini HTML (programming language used to create websites) projects on Code a Club website. He continued to develop his skills and created his own website within a few lessons. After further research, he was able to integrate animation using an extension of HTML programming called Javascript, within the website he created. He is currently working on using Python Programming and has developed some mini entertainment games.

It would only be fair to say that Harvey is on the journey of becoming an amazing programmer – someone who designs and makes computer programs.

Programmers are logical thinkers and problem-solvers. They look at problems and try to come up with different ways of solving them.

There is often more than one way to solve a problem and coders try to find the most efficient way. This could mean finding the solution to the problem which requires the least number of steps; this has been clearly demonstrated by Harvey, not only with his own work but by helping others within the classroom as well.

The Computer Science & IT Department are so proud of the progress Harvey is making! We are really looking forward to showcasing more of his independent programming skills and games! Well done Harvey!
