Last week, I had the privilege of meeting with the STEM Leadership Team to discuss strategies and share ideas on advancing STEM education at our school. During this productive meeting, we reviewed the various STEM clubs running this term and allocated our STEM leaders to their preferred clubs, where they will play an essential role in supporting and inspiring fellow students.
The STEM leaders at Bushey Meads play a vital role in fostering an environment of curiosity, collaboration and innovation. They serve as role models, encouraging younger students to engage with STEM subjects, participate in clubs and take on challenges like the CyberFirst Girls Competition, Soaring to Success programme and the UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) Maths Challenge. The leaders also help shape the direction of STEM education, bringing fresh ideas and new perspectives to the table.
When asked what they hope to bring to the role of STEM Leader, the students shared inspiring visions for their work. One STEM leader emphasised the importance of fostering curiosity and critical thinking, stating: “As a STEM Leader, I would like to encourage curiosity and critical thinking in students. I want them to love a subject that offers so many benefits for their future careers. My aim is to create an environment that fosters collaboration and participation in lessons or clubs. Everyone is welcome, and we will stand by your side despite any difficulties. I would also like to instill resilience in students, preparing them for future challenges, like the UKMT Maths Challenge, which can help their knowledge and mindset grow.”
Another STEM leader highlighted the value of motivation and promoting STEM across the school community, expressing: “ I want to encourage and motivate students to take part in STEM projects. I can also help promote STEM subjects among the students in our school and the wider Trust.”
Last week, I was also impressed by the outstanding engagement in both the Technology and Computing clubs, where students were diligently working on their STEM projects and testing new ideas.
STEM at Bushey Meads is thriving, thanks to the energy and commitment of our STEM leaders and students. Together, we will continue to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.
