Authentic Learning

Joining a Year 9 class for their physical geography lesson I had the pleasure of seeing these students modelling all of our Keys to Success. Engaged in independent research they were asked to compare two earthquakes from different parts of the world. Building on their knowledge of where fault lines around the world are located these students related theory to real-world events. Many students cited the 2011, 8.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the coast of Japan, rattling a 500-mile region and setting off a tsunami showing both an understanding of the natural causes of this even as well as the human cost. Increasing engagement and making students aware of social choices is an important reason for relating learning to real-life examples. At BMS we strive to make subject content meaningful to students and encourage them to apply their skills to relevant experiences in order to create an authentic learning experience.
