PE CONCEPT of the Week: Knowledge (Effects of exercise) (HEAD) Mrs Cooper
The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition, we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT which is delivered through a range of activities. This week’s concept is
Knowledge (Effects of Exercise) and relates to the Head strand of the assessment model. An awareness of the benefits of physical activity is one of the things that as a faculty we strive to deliver to the students, in order to help with their social, mental and physical health.
In a GCSE PE lesson this week, in preparation for their upcoming exams, the year 11 students have been required to show their understanding of this key concept by answering the following question: Using practical examples, describe the emotional benefits of participating in physical activity. Explain how regular exercise and a balanced diet result in long-term benefits on the heart. (6). The delivery of such concepts at KS3 really helps support the learning journey of our examination groups.
In KS3 lessons this week students have been talking about the physical changes that take part in their bodies as a result of the exercise they have been doing, and how a range of different activities require different elements of fitness.
Sport can be a very social activity and this is evident in the large numbers of students who attend the array of extra-curricular clubs on offer, tonight (Tuesday) students were involved in girls netball practice, girls athletics training (photo below), SEND PE club, a yr 8 boys basketball fixture (photo below) and a year 7 boys rugby festival. The social nature of these activities have, for lots of students, a positive effect and help maintain a lifelong interest in sport.
SEND PE club, a yr 8 boys basketball fixture (photo below) and a year 7 boys rugby festival. The social nature of these activities have, for lots of students, a positive effect and help maintain a lifelong interest in sport.
All clubs, fixtures and extra-curricular events are shared with the students each week and are available in google classrooms, in the changing rooms and noticeboard areas around the PE faculty. We would encourage all students to get involved in at least one additional activity to really understand the lasting benefits of exercise.

Commended performances : Whole team !
Comment : The Senior boys rounded off an excellent District league season with a fully deserved 5-1 win in the League Final v Croxley Danes.A good start saw the boys take an early lead with a well taken goal from K Tinriover. However Croxley Danes quickly equalised which saw the boys move up the gears to take control of the match. K Larkin finished off an excellent move to give the boys a half time lead. Second half goals from K Tinriover and 2 from I Harry-Brown did not flatter the boys who controlled the game for long periods. We say goodbye to a number of players who have given excellent service to BMS football and fully deserved going out with a final win. Well played all !

Comment: A difficult afternoon, on a very difficult pitch. The Year 10 boys faced a St Columbas side who were able to make the breakthrough late on in the match to seal the victory. After going 1 – 0 down, we fought back and managed to take the game to 2 – 2 at half term. Late in the second half, a good half volley from outside the box nestled into the back of the net. Despite their best efforts towards the end, the boys were knocked out of the cup. Well done to all involved this football season.

Result: Lost 53-43
Squad: D. Tegzas, A. Abrahams, M. Simmonds, S. Sullivan, A. Williams, M. Foote, S. Harries, E. Joseph, A. Parvaz, S. Mosanenzadeh Fard
Comment: A game that got away from us in a few minutes in the 4th quarter. With the game all square going into the 4th the boys had worked hard to ensure we were in with a shot of taking the victory, but a run of points for the opposition took them away from us and with little time to correct that gap, Rickmansworth took the win.

Comment: The Year 8 Boys basketball team made it 3 wins out of 3 with a very closely contested win over Rickmansworth. Some excellent offensive work from E Silver was the highlight scoring 14 points and it was really positive to see the other boys growing in confidence in their ability to drive into the basket. After an excellent last quarter comeback from Rickmansworth to tie the game up the decisive winning basket was scored by E Silver to clinch victory. Well done to all the boys who worked so hard throughout.

Commended Performances: D. Hope & F. Murphy
Comment: An exciting afternoon of Rugby as the Year 7 boys went over to Watford RFC to take part in the final development rugby festival of the year. Only two other schools involved this time meant that the boys were able to take part in longer matches this time. after a period of working on basic skills, we got some gameplay. The boys were able to come across well in the gameplay as they battle hard making key tackles supporting each other and running with the ball. The students were enthusiastic and respectful throughout the whole tournament and their performances showed their commitment to rugby. especially well done to D. Hope and F. Murphy who came into the team today for the first time and went for it tackling anybody no matter their size and demonstrating some excellent skill throughout. Well done to all involved.
