For the first half term of Year 10 we have studied a 20th century play, ‘An Inspector Calls’ by JB Priestley. Although written in 1945, the play is set in 1912. Priestley uses the play to communicate his political views on Socialism and to spread a message to the rich people through the character of the Inspector. Priestley wrote the play because he wanted to show the ignorance and lack of social responsibility that the higher classes had towards the working/lower classes.

I enjoyed studying this play because I liked the mystery it included and how the play built up with tension, with an unexpected plot twist at the end. I also enjoyed studying the historical context of the play and how Priestley showed this in the plot of ‘An Inspector Calls’.

After following the return to school this year, we have been going over the key mistakes that we may have made in our PPE while working on our paper one question answer structures. Paper 1 uses pieces of fiction writing which we have used to practise analysing and explaining within our writing. We have also started ‘A Christmas Carol’ which is a novella written by Dickens. We have started analysing quotes and characters in the novella as well as answering key questions about the themes of the book. As well as that, we have created speeches which are used for English Language Spoken Endorsement. We learned how to create an effective speech used to persuade, and to teach our audience about a topic we are passionate about.
