Update from the Childcare Department

I decided to give my year 10 class a project to find out how much it would cost to have a baby, what they might need and what routines would be best. This was all in aid of supporting their understanding in the subject. The following is an account from one of the members of the class:

This term we were assigned a project by Mrs Bowyer. We were asked to create an egg baby, by carefully removing the insides of an egg and decorate it as a baby before being asked to look after it. After making and designing the egg baby we had to make a birth certificate, including a name, a date of birth, information of the place of birth and how much it weighed.

Soon after we went onto listing all the baby’s needs which included: clothing, a pushchair, baby wipes, sleeping sack, milk, baby bottles, nappies, a cot, a baby grow, rattley toys, baby food, sheets and blankets and a baby carrier. We were amazed at how much it would cost to look after a newborn baby!

Routines were also made for our egg babies in order to keep them healthy and happy.

From this project I have learnt that dealing with babies can be tricky, and that following a fully-structured routine is the best way to look after one. In terms of money, babies are quite expensive to look after, but it has been a fun experience learning all about what it’s really like to maintain a happy and healthy child.
