On Tuesday 26th March, as part of our FLAIR week, I had the greatest pleasure in taking 25 year 11 students on a trip to Balliol College at Oxford University. The students were selected based on their exceptional performance in their November PPE exams and their predicted grades. At Bushey Meads School, we believe that success comes as a result of Growth Mindset and continued hard work and these students certainly deserve to be rewarded for their efforts so far.
The day started with a tour of Balliol College with Mathilda, an undergraduate student in her second year at Oxford University. Mathlida gave some real insight into what life at Balliol looks like in terms of studies and a huge array of extra-curricular opportunities. The chance to do some pole dancing certainly raised a few brows. A presentation followed which covered what to consider when deciding on future pathways for A-Levels and university as well as the applications process and personal statements. Lunch was served in the main hall, which felt like something from a Harry Potter movie and was followed by an enlightening and engaging Maths Masterclass by James, a third-year maths undergraduate.
It was all extremely interesting and informative and our year 11s looked very happy and comfortable in the various settings.
We have already been invited back next year, so a huge thank you from me to all the staff involved in the planning ahead of the trip (we couldn’t do trips without you), as well as those present on the day.
Finally, well done to our fabulous Year 11 students for being simply amazing.
I wish you all every success in your forthcoming exams!
