Little Reddings Maths Collaboration
On Wednesday, Miss Barker-Dunmill led a maths workshop with Year 5 students in Mrs Scholte’s class at Little Reddings Primary School, as a part of our cross-trust collaboration. The goal of the workshop was to help Year 5 students understand the concept of perimeter through hands-on activities, problem-solving, and peer collaboration. The session began with an introduction around measuring and then questioning to identify how to calculate perimeter, as well as why we use it.

In a wonderful display of cross-age collaboration, Year 10 Bushey Meads students volunteered to assist in the workshop. These students, already familiar with the key concepts, played the role of mentors. They guided the younger students through challenges, answered questions, and provided personalised assistance to ensure every student felt supported.

The event allowed all the students involved to build confidence, fostering teamwork, and nurturing a love for learning. Watching the Year 5 students gain clarity and the Year 10 students develop leadership skills was excellent. It was interesting to see how many students rose to the challenge of problem-solving to find their answers in multi-step questions.

Building on this success, we plan to host more cross-age mentoring opportunities within our maths department. We believe this approach strengthens our school community, particularly with the transition between primary and secondary, as well as provides a unique, enriching experience for all students involved.
