PE CONCEPT of the Week : RESPONSIBILITY (Head) Mr Cartledge
The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT focus which is taught as part of the delivery of a range of sporting activities.
This weeks focus is part of the HEAD strand and involves looking at RESPONSIBILITY in PE. Students are asked to consider what taking on RESPONSIBILITY in PE involves – this may include taking on responsibility for different sections of a lesson such as leading a warm-up or a skills drill. Students are also reminded about the importance of taking on responsibility for bringing full correct kit for a lesson and arriving on time to the changing rooms to enable lessons to start promptly. It has been great to see students coming fully prepared for rugby lessons with outdoor multisport shirts, shorts, BMS socks and a gumshields this week. Rugby is an excellent activity for students to demonstrate responsibility and this can be seen here with the Year 8 boys developing safe tackling technique in a controlled learning practice environment and then taking responsibility for applying the skills learnt into small-sided competitive game play. Each CONCEPT is assessed by the PE staff and many students always score really well for responsibility by participating in all PE lessons in full kit and working hard during the lessons in both drills and game play to improve their performance.
KS3 INTER-HOUSE CROSS-COUNTRY
Well done SYCAMORE House – Champions !!
This year’s Inter House Cross-Country races saw the event take place in good conditions with the rain keeping away for all races and in most cases the sun shining. The effort levels in nearly all cases were really high with students applying themselves really well to score points for their houses. After 6 races SYCAMORE House came out on top with a massive 1459 points beating MAPLE House into second place with a score of 1257 points. For those who find the event difficult we continue to reinforce the healthy lifestyles message and remind students they should be doing 7 hours of physical activity a week to maintain a normal level of fitness. The top performers in each race are entered into the District Championships and we look forward to hearing how they get on over the next few weeks.
The top 3 finishers in each race were as follows :

FOOTBALL
Year 9 Boys v Croxley Danes (District League) AWAY Mr O’Kelly
Date: Wednesday 23rd October 2024
Result: Won 3-2
Scorers: R. Hodgson 2, R. Doran
Squad: E. Goddard, R. Durant, A. Choudhry, R. Payne, L. Khan, J. Evans, J. Lewis, R. Hodgson, R. Doran, K. Mistry, K. Walker, A. Shinkwin, O. Harris
Commended performances: L. Khan
Comment: A game that should probably have been won earlier in the game as BMS had plenty of possession and chances. But with a couple of goals from mistakes conceded, it fell to almost the final touch of the game with R. Doran rushing in and following up a free kick that had crashed against the crossbar, shooting up into the air. With the almost point blank header, BMS took the lead, leaving only time for the kick off to take place and the final whistle was blown. A deserved win.
NETBALL
Year 11 v St.Michaels (AWAY) Mrs Cooper
Date : Wednesday 23rd October 2024
Result : Won 22-11
Squad : M.Baines, M.Bazile, E.Bird, S.Doran, V.Hill, A.Permeti, J.Isles
Commended performances : M.Bazile voted by opposition, E.Bird – Mrs Cooper’s POM (player of match)
Comment : A convincing victory for the year 11 team who continued with the same emphatic play as in last week’s tournament. With several key players injured and unavailable A.Permeti and J.Isles stepped in to support the team and did a great job. The first quarter was close with BMS working hard to work together but things were taking a while to settle. In the second quarter the girls began to establish a routine to their play and took a small advantage into the second half. They built on this in the final quarters to secure the win with a deserved victory. Well played ladies.
Year 10 v St.Michaels (AWAY) Mrs Cooper
Date : Wednesday 23rd October 2024
Result : Lost 9-13
Squad : A.Belghirua, A.Gibson, E.Mullings, H.Sookhoo, R.Chudasma, M.Rumney, H.Spendlowe
Commended performances : A.Gibson voted by opposition and Mrs Cooper’s POM (player of match)
Comment : A narrow defeat for the year 10 squad in this the last fixture before the HT break. The game was really close throughout the first half with the scores level going into half time. However it was St.Michaels who pulled away in the third quarter with more accurate passing and a greater shot conversion. It was this quarter that did the damage and whilst the girls pulled it back in the final end they were unable to recoup the deficit. Onto the next game when I’m sure they will be back to winning ways.
PE kit
It is essential that students have the full correct PE kit for all lessons. This includes shinpads and black /yellow socks when participating in football lessons and also a pair of white sports socks for all other activities. Students will be reminded when activities change. Students not bringing the correct kit will instantly receive consequence points.
Girls should be wearing plain black shorts which are longer than the length of their PE shirt or hoody. Leggings should be black sports leggings and not see through. Black tracksuit bottoms are also permitted.
ALL jewellery should be removed prior to the start of the lesson, including earrings, and hair should be tied up.
For any parental enquiries about any aspects of PE contact the Head of PE and Health Faculty Ashley Cartledge [email protected] . For any specific issues related to Girls PE and girls fixtures contact Sarah Cooper [email protected].
