Enriching Art Lessons and Activities

Students in Year 9 art lessons are studying the work of Niki de Saint Phalle, a French sculptor, painter, filmmaker, and author of colorful hand-illustrated books. Widely noted as one of the few female monumental sculptors, Saint Phalle was also known for her social commitment and work. She began creating art in quite an experimental style and received worldwide attention for her light-hearted, colorful, large-scale sculptures of animals, monsters, and female figures.

Their lesson on Wednesday morning demonstrated their really good attitudes to learning, despite the heat, and their commitment to learning from a diverse and enriching curriculum in the arts at BMS.
Year 8 students during the morning were carrying on with their work based around their studies of Julian Opie, a British contemporary artist famous for his minimalist, graphic portraits and figures. His highly distinctive style uses bold black outlines and flat blocks of colour to represent human forms and landscapes into universal, almost cartoon-like symbols.
Their task was to choose a well known celebrity and draw a head and shoulders portrait of them in his style. It was another impressive visit to the Art Department at BMS.
