Wolf Hall’ (2009) by Hilary Mantel

Recently recommended as a lockdown read by the Independent, Wolf Hall is historical fiction set in the time of Henry VIII. It follows the king’s quest for a male heir, from the perspective of chief minister Thomas Cromwell.

To avoid disappointment when you’ve finished reading, you can indulge in the excellent BBC mini series that covers Wolf Hall and sequel Bring Up the Bodies.
