It’s been fabulous to see students from years 7 and 8 reading for pleasure and completing tasks from their Reading Award booklets. It’s fascinating for me to see the books they’ve chosen and the effort that students are putting into their work is clear. Here are some particularly pleasing examples taken from Tomas Davter’s Bronze Award – a detailed cover for an original ‘ideal’ book and a review that reflects the School’s values of ‘ a mind to be kind’. Well done Tomas!
My ideal book:
Title: Alton Towers – Facts and More!
Description: Most books are stories but I wanted a book with information in it about something I love – Alton Towers the theme park!
I would want lots of facts about the rides in the book and lots of pictures of different rides from the past and now.
Book Review: Tom Gates: Everything’s Amazing (sort of) by Liz Pichon
This book is about a boy called Tom Gates who tells us about his life that can be difficult at times especially when his sister or Marcus are annoying him. Marcus always annoys Tom but luckily Tom always manages to get the upper hand, like humiliating him so he stops annoying him, well for at least 3 minutes. His best friend is called Derek – they both like the same things like Dude3 which is a band and they play in their own band called Dog Zombie.
In general, I really enjoyed scenes such as Tom’s birthday because it was an exciting part of the book. My favourite character is Derek (his best friend) because he is a nice person and is always there for Tom when something bad happens. An example of this is when Derek had bought a pen for Tom before they sold out. My least favourite character is Delia. I think she could be involved with more of the story. Also, she acts like she doesn’t love or even like her brother. I know that brothers and sisters always fight (trust me I know that for sure) but I think she should show more love towards Tom; however she does buy Tom a nice birthday present.
I would recommend this book if you enjoy the Diary of a Wimpy Kid as they have similar themes such as things always going wrong for the main character. I also really enjoy the illustrations because they add to the comedy of the book.
