On Wednesday the 5th of June 2024, I went to see the Michael Jackson musical. The show portrayed the life and career of Michael Jackson in varying stages. There were many talented actors, but a stand out aspect of their casting decision lay solely with the tri-cast of Michael. The musical explores Jackson’s childhood years, emphasising his time in the Jackson 5, his teenage years up to the debut of his 1982 hit ‘Thriller’, and finally, his more familiar and established older self from 1992, who takes on a narrative role, ‘MJ.’ The musical explores the themes of childhood stardom and the effects that has on their adult counterparts. It also had a huge emphasis on Jackson’s performance style.
The Jukebox musical took the legendary songs of Michael Jackson’s and used them brilliantly in the context of telling his life story in a meaningful and comedic way. The essence of MJ was prevalent, not only through music but through atmosphere. The set, dancing and music all intertwined to make a fascinating depiction of his life. I really enjoyed the use of Jackson’s songs as a narrative device, and the creative decision to make this a jukebox musical was a good one.
This experience taught me that musical theatre doesn’t have to be traditional, and can also depict genres such as 80s pop and rock. I thoroughly enjoyed this unexpected change.
I would highly recommend going to see this musical if you are a music lover due to the intense focus on detail, both autobiographically and musically. It is a great show to see if you have children due to its fast paced and jovial nature.
