Celebrating Extra Curricular Activities

I was fortunate enough to watch many of our students compete in a football tournament this weekend.  Some were incredibly successful, winning their divisions with the dedication of a whole season of hard work and commitment, and others can be congratulated for never giving up and giving it their all, right through to the last minutes of the games, regardless of scores or chances to win.  I was so glad to see how much everyone seemed to enjoy the day (including Rod Stewart!).

It did remind me of the many, many benefits of team sports for our students (https://www.therugbypaper.co.uk/guest-blogs/34161/six-advantages-of-team-sports-for-students/).

Mr Searle spoke to many of the students about these advantages in an assembly recently.  Team sports can improve self confidence, encourage fair play and respect, improve will power and perseverance and can help develop social skills, to name but a few benefits.  Those are the benefits to the students.

There are benefits to parents as well.  As a parent, I feel much happier knowing my child is being encouraged to enjoy a variety of experiences every week and I feel a little less guilty about allowing screen time. I can relax a bit knowing my child is getting exercise and fresh air, as well as enjoying time with their friends.  I can also say I fully enjoyed spending time with other parents and sharing the joy and heartbreak of every goal.  It is so nice to be able to bond over our children’s accomplishments instead of the negatives (I am sure I am not the only one guilty of wallowing about the latest drama with fellow parents a little bit too often).
In short this is a well done.  A well done to the kids who have put in hours of practice, training, commitment and hard work.  This is also a well done to all the parents who have given up hours to ferry the kids to training and matches, who have given up £££ to new kits (who knew how quickly feet could grow!!!) and fees, not to mention the hours spent in the rain and sun alike.
