For this Sociology lesson we were asked to bring in a chocolate bar to aid us in improving our essay practice. We were asked to place our chocolate bar on an A4 piece of paper. We then used 3 different colours to describe, analyse and evaluate our chocolate bar. We got out our chocolates and had to describe the shape, texture and taste. We then analysed our chocolate bar by comparing it to different brands. This is what we call AO1, AO2 and AO3 of writing a paragraph in a Sociology essay.
AO1– This is your knowledge about the sociologist, definitions and keywords.
AO2– This is your analysis giving examples and using statistics.
AO3– This is your evaluation- the strengths and the weaknesses of the theory.
We then used the chocolate bar structure to write a paragraph of why Marxists, Functionalists or Feminists think the family is positive or negative in society.
Here is one of my peer’s example of the paragraph that was constructed during the lesson:
One theory that supports the idea that the family is not equal is feminism, Ann Oakley believes that women are oppressed in the family because of the double shift. This means that women have the burden of both the housework and childcare. This is unfair, because it supports the patriarchal ideology of the conventional family. The conventional family is a family that consists of two, married, heterosexual adults with dependent children. Women are expected to cook, clean and take care of the children even though in 1975, a law was passed that allowed women to open a bank account in their name. This meant that women could get jobs and earn their own salary. Moreover, the idea that women should stay at home is an out-dated belief that pushes the narrative that women should take care and provide for their husbands. This is offensive and extremely demanding towards women, because it makes it seem as though a woman’s only purpose is to be there for their husband, that women are the inferior gender and will never be as important as men.

From this experience I have learnt that the use of the chocolate bar has helped me to remember and visualize how the structure of a paragraph in the essay should be put together. I think it’s fair to say on behalf of the whole class that this was a very enjoyable lesson and the best part was, WE HAD CHOCOLATES !
