RUGBY
Year 7 DISTRICT DEVELOPMENT RUGBY FESTIVAL @ WATFORD RFC Mr Cartledge
Date : Tuesday 3rd December 2019
Results : Won v Reach Free, Won v St Joan of Arc, Drew v Croxley Danes.
Commended performances : Whole team !
Comment : The year 7 rugby team had their first experience of some competitive rugby in the annual District Development Festival held at Watford Rugby Club. This half term the boys have been taking part in a unit of rugby in PE supported by some after school training sessions. There is some real talent in the year group and the boys showed some good skills as well as great enthusiasm and team spirit throughout the tournament. Matches were played against Reach Free, Croxley Danes and St Joan of Arc with the boys recording 2 wins and a draw, The quality of tackling and rucking was particularly impressive with O Spencer and F Doherty outstanding. It was a really positive experience for the boys who can now look forward to further competitive fixtures in late February and March.

Comment: The best performance of the season from our boys, we started strongly working the opposition goalkeeper throughout the match. I.Dahmani controlled the midfield with excellent passing and tackling while A.ChaudryShamas showed fantastic dribbling ability. The front players were able to capitalise on the chances created with 3 of our players scoring hat-tricks.
NETBALL
Year 9 v Westfield (League) AWAY Mrs Wright
Date : Monday 2nd December 2019
Result : Lost 6-10
Squad : S. Lea (captain), M. Sanchez, E. Clarke, A. Choudhury, E. Doody, A. Deutrom, M. Eldridge, L. Jackman, H Nabi, A. Wolsetnholme, C. Wright-Hobson H. Naz, S. Appleby
Commended performances : S. Lea, A. Deutrom, E. Clarke
Comment: We took a squad of 13 girls along to play Westfield’s on Monday night, aiming to play all members of the team in a variety of rotations. We had a nervous start to the game and lost possession frequently due to the fast pace from the outset. We were intercepting the ball well but just gave the ball away under pressure from the Westfield’s strong defence. Credit to our defenders for saving us from a larger defeat with numerous rebounds gained and managing to tip the ball from a shot across the back line. Our attacking players were challenged continuously and were kept out of the circle by the Westfield’s defence. Our best quarter was the final one where we managed to slow the game down, take command and finally break through their GK and GD.
Despite the defeat the girls battled to the final whistle and were in good spirits throughout. They even treated me to a (very loud) sing song in the bus on the way home! To be fair, their voices are pretty decent. I’m expecting a performance at the xmas entertainment show…..
BADMINTON
Girls KS3/4 v Westfield HOME Mrs Cooper
Date: Wednesday 4th December
Team: KS3 – K.Paradava, A.Andononva, L.Mallard-Shaw, AL.Palan, A.Shrestha, B.Shanthakumar, R.Vara, KS4 – S.Narroway, J.Benveniste, G.Brass, A.Hutchinson, MA.Hayes,C.Gonzalez-Aller, Z.Picksley, M.Thaker, K.Branigan, B.Coste, H.Barry
Comment: An opportunity for girls in KS3 and 4 to play a competitive but friendly evening of badminton proved to be a really enjoyable event. With some of the students using this to boost their GCSE practical grades and others playing for a new experience. It was great to see a whole mixture of students representing, some for the first time, Bushey Meads.
Playing competitive matches against students from Westfield all the girls made good progress and began to develop competitive instincts which improved the quality of their play. They also developed an awareness of the rules required for doubles play. For the GCSE students it was another valuable opportunity to play competitively a key requirement of the GCSE specification. Although no formal record was kept of the scores BMS secured victory in a large % of their games. We look forward to travelling to Westfield in the new year for a similar event.
