This week we are celebrating the outstanding work of our Year 10 students in the GCSE Design and Technology classes. From woodworking wonders to textile triumphs, our students are showcasing their talents and skills in the most creative ways.

Design and Technology: Crafting Excellence in Resistant Materials

In the bustling workshop of our Year 10 GCSE Design and Technology class, students have been busy crafting various wood joints. Armed with traditional hand tools like the tenon saw, they diligently explore the intricacies of joinery. They are exploring a diverse array of wood joints, including the timeless dovetail, the versatile finger joint, and the sturdy bridle joint. These young craftsmen and craftswomen not only showcase their technical proficiency but also demonstrate an understanding of the aesthetic and functional aspects of woodworking. Through patient sanding and skillful filling techniques, they meticulously refine their creations, transforming raw materials into polished, finished samples that stand as tangible testaments to their evolving mastery of the woodworking craft.

Taking a leap into the contemporary, these talented individuals are also delving into the world of plastics. Through the process of line bending, they’re turning sheets of acrylic into sleek and functional phone stands. This synthesis of traditional craftsmanship and modern design principles is not only impressive but also indicative of the forward-thinking approach our students bring to their work.

Diving deeper into the material realm, our Year 10 designers are exploring the fascinating characteristics of plastics. From the resilient nature of thermosetting plastics to the malleability of thermoforming materials, they’re gaining a comprehensive understanding of how to navigate the diverse world of plastics. This knowledge will undoubtedly serve them well as they continue to innovate and create.

Textile Marvels: Crafting Resource Folders and Toiletry Bags

Meanwhile, in the world of textiles, our Year 10 students are weaving their own tales of creativity and skill. They’ve been busy producing resource folders, where they’ve been practising a myriad of techniques and skills that will undoubtedly elevate the quality of their practical work throughout the year.

The latest project on their needles is the creation of bespoke toiletry bags. Designing and printing their own fabric is just the beginning. Our textile artists are incorporating quilting techniques to add a touch of individuality and charm to one side of the bag. Finally they will be assembling the pieces using a zip, creating a secure and stylish bag for all their toiletry essentials.

Stay tuned for the unveiling of the final products! Our Year 10 students have made a promising start to their GCSE studies and we look forward to seeing their creativity and innovation grow as the course progresses.
