You Are A Champion!

This week, our theme at Bushey Meads has been ‘aspiration’ and Mrs Turton, our fantastic LRC manager, has been celebrating just that with her year 7 and 8 classes.

Last month she entered a National Literacy Trust raffle for a free copy of ‘You Are A Champion- How to be the best you can be.’ by Marcus Rashford (MBE). Much to our delight, she won and this also meant she has been given access to an exclusive interview between Marcus and the co writer, Carl Anca, for the whole of this week. Upon news of her win it was time to mobilise, and all her classes have been given the opportunity to watch the video since Monday and discuss what ‘being the best you can be’ meant to them.

Mrs Turton has ensured there are three copies of his book in the library as it is proving very popular.

Now, I can’t say I’m a Manchester United fan, but I can say I am a massive Marcus Rashford fan! We can’t fail to be impressed and humbled by his unswerving campaigning for, and faith in, young people- especially those whose families struggle financially. He is an inspiring example of what you can achieve when you work hard, dream big and never accept the word ‘can’t. His recent work with BT’s ‘Draw The Line’ campaign calling out online abuse and hate has been particularly powerful. I imagine many of you will have seen the adverts during the Euros coverage. See a link here to a video where BT sports reporters discuss their experiences and why the campaign is so important:

Watch out also for Marcus’s collaboration with top chef Tom Kerridge on the ‘Full Time’ campaign. We agree wholeheartedly with Tom Kerridge when he recently said, “Marcus has been doing a phenomenal job in shining a bright light on the nation’s child poverty issue and continues to fight for systematic change and Government support. His formation of the Child Food Poverty Task Force has brought together the biggest players in the British food industry, to stand united in finding a long-term sustainable framework to combat child food poverty across the UK.”

You can follow the campaign on facebook and Instagram.

In the meantime, perhaps this article will inspire you to think about how you too can become ‘the best you can be’!
