PE CONCEPT of the Week: COMPETITIVENESS (Hands) Mrs Cooper

The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT focus which is taught as part of the delivery of a range of sporting activities.

This week’s focus is part of the Hands strand and involves looking at COMPETITIVENESS in PE. Competitiveness is defined as the quality of being as good as or better than others of a comparable nature. Competition is not for everyone and some people shy away from anything that involves it, however competition is part of the lives we lead. Sport by its very nature is competitive and it’s been our responsibility in PE this week to bring competition into our lessons in a fun and engaging way. In my lessons, students have taken part in lots of little relays as part of their warm ups. Students have been asked to challenge themselves to compete against their own levels of performance – setting a benchmark for themselves and then trying to beat it. There have been lots of shrieks of delight when teams have won races and Reward points awarded. Lessons have focussed on lots of minigames in handball, basketball and football to encourage all students to be competitive and to identify what makes a performer competitive.

Comment: An excellent team performance saw the boys make it 4 league wins out of 4 to continue their excellent form this year. The boys controlled the game from start to finish with some free flowing football and some very good goals. It was great to see the boys playing with confidence with all the boys showing their ability to play passing football. Well done to the whole team.

Year 7 Boys DISTRICT 6-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT (@ Westfield)  Mr Harris

Date: Monday 11th November 2024

Result: 2nd Place

Scorers

Squad: C. Dias (GK), F. Murphy, T. Kearny,  R. Gurney, C. Killpack, B. Hemmings, N. Cunningham

Commended performances: F. Murphy

Comment: A good evening for the Year 7 boys as they took on a variety of schools in the football on Monday evening. We faced against four strong schools, coming through into the final to only be beaten in the last minute with a long ball over the top. During the afternoon, we played really good football in the game moving it around and creating excellent opportunities, it seemed to be in the end we miss our shooting boots at times as we missed a number of opportunities. In the end we got through to the final and managed to be on top of Reach Free right until the end where we switched off and be it a long ball over the top, the player slotted home and finished. An excellent evening for these boys!

Year 7 Boys DISTRICT 6-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT (@ Westfield) Mr James

Date: Monday 11th November 2024

Results: 2-1 Loss / 2- 0 Loss / 1- 0 Win / 0 – 0 Draw / 4-0 Loss / 1-1 Draw (Lost on Pens) = Overall position 6th place

Scorers: C. Vaughan (X3)

Squad: F. Carney (GK), C. Vaughan, A. Hodgson, B. Stanley, D. Hope, M. Thomas-Buck, D. Vraciu, J. Muraj

Commended performances: B. Stanley, C. Vaughan

Comment: Overall The boys worked hard against very tough opponents within the tournament. Throughout the games BMS managed to pass the ball round nicely leading to some good goal scoring opportunities. On the other hand we very often committed to many players forward leading the opposition to quickly counter attack and score. The boys did manage to get a memorable win against eventual 3rd place finishers Westfield. In general the boys should be really pleased with their efforts and should look forward to their games coming up.

Year 8 Boys Football CLUB – Mr James

As the days get colder and nights get shorter. It never stops these year 8 boys coming to football training every week. It is a fantastic social opportunity for the boys to play friendly competitive games against each other. It has been great seeing lots of familiar faces at training and seeing them enjoy themselves whilst playing football and I hope this continues going forward.

GIRLS FOOTBALL

U15 Girls v Futures Academy (League) Home  Mr O’Kelly

Date: Tuesday 12th November 2024

Result: Won 4-2

Squad: M. Sharp, L. Mullane, A. Permeti, A. Baliguat, M. Huryta, J. Herman, E-M, Wakling, Z. Chowdhury, J. Frumuselu, M. Hooper, L. Brown, T. Bracewell, O. Issac, B. Fowler

Commended performances: J. Frumuselu and B. Fowler

Comment: A fantastic effort from the squad saw them win their first game of the season and for some their first game for a number of years. Going into a game against an opposition who were regular football players outside of school the girls knew they would need to work extremely hard to perform on a full 11 a side pitch. With plenty of extra running and strong defensive play the girls scored first to lead at half time 1-0. With a more back and forth game in the second half, finally with a few minutes to go the game was secured with the BMS fourth goal and a thoroughly deserved victory.

Comment : Congratulations to our Year 9 Rugby Team, who gave an outstanding performance at the Watford District Rugby Tournament! Their hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship were evident in every match, making the entire school community proud. The team’s solid defence and powerful running set them apart as they competed against some of the top schools in the area. Each player contributed to this success, showing the strength of our school’s rugby program. Well done Year 9, your dedication and spirit were truly inspiring!

Year 8 Boys District Development Festival @ Watford RFC Mr Cartledge

Date : Thurs 7th November 2024

Results: Played 4 Lost 4 v Reach Free, Grange Academy, Croxley Danes, St Clement Danes

Squad :  E Ashton, D Isles, J Zulberg, C Allan, T Jordan, Z King, E Silver, F Gillett, O Phillips, D Williams, A Tobias, R Samin, P Payne

Commended performances: J Zulberg, D Isles, E Silver

Comment : With the very limited previous playing experience of a large number of the boys this was always going to be a difficult challenge for the Year 8 boys team. However the boys could not be faulted for their effort, support and team spirit. Improvements were made throughout with tries being scored by E Silver and R Samin who both displayed strong running ability. As the boys game understanding developed they produced some good rugby but just fell short on athleticism and physicality in some fixtures. The boys really enjoyed the experience and hopefully this will lead to further improvements in PE lessons this term.

Comment: On Tuesday afternoon, we took a trip to Watford Rugby Club to play in a rugby tournament vs several other local schools. At the fixture, we started well and scored some tries early on through a combination of strong running and a demonstration of lots of physicality on the pitch. We managed to win our first game vs Croxley Danes, with tries from N. Cunningham (x2) & M. Thomas-Buck. In our second game, we started slow but worked our way back into it through tries from M. Thomas-Buck & N. Cunningham. In our third game, we faced Queens, where we came out victorious through our physicality and strong running. Tries in this one scored by N. Cunningham (x2), M. Thomas-Buck, G. Bees. Finally in our final game, against Reach Free, a very strong and physical side, whilst we competed extremely well, we ended up losing. We did score one try and this was through G. Bees. It was an excellent event that many boys who took part enjoyed and found to be valuable in developing their confidence in rugby. Well done all.

NETBALL

Year 7 Girls v Grange Academy (League) Home   Miss Sunpongco

Date : Monday 11th November 2024

Result : Won 9 – 4

Squad : N. Mowle, A. Bateman, J. Hearn, F. Shire, F. Sheward and E. Coetzee, E. Wurr, O. Morris, L. Tokai

Commended performances : Player of the match chosen by opposition is N. Mowle. Player of the match chosen by Miss Sunpongco is F. Shire.

Comment : A great performance from the girls with many turnovers, they worked hard to get to the goal. Communication on the court is massively improving and they are now becoming aware of the team’s strengths and weaknesses to play on. Their teamwork really comes through and each player contributes to the team’s success. Special mention to the defence team who are relentlessly getting those turnovers and rebounds for the team to take to goal. Well done on your hard work girls! You are making the whole school community proud!
