The KS3 pathway classes have got off to a great start this term in English. In year 7, we have been looking at building writing skills and have recently started a new topic on Beowulf. Below you can see the class leading the learning on similes on our recent Subject Leader Day. Over the course of the term we will be looking at building some of the essential writing skills, so it was great to see the students engaged and passionate about their learning from the outset.
In year 8, we have been studying the book Journey to Jo’burg and the students have completed their first assessment – writing a newspaper article about Nelson Mandela’s release from prison (see picture below). During Black History Month, we combined the lessons with a little background history which allowed the students to explore the book in further detail and really get to grips with what the characters are experiencing in Apartheid South Africa. We look forward to continuing the book and finding out what happens to the characters.
Lastly, in year 9 we have been looking at Romeo and Juliet and the students have started to develop their exam writing skills in preparation for their GCSEs. Both Mrs McNaughton and I have been very proud of how they have persevered with the difficult language of Shakespeare and are continuing to give it their all.
As a new member of staff, it has been a delight getting to know the young people in these classes and I look forward to continuing teaching them throughout their KS3 journey.
