PE CONCEPT of the Week: RESILIENCE (Heart) Miss Sunpongco
The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT focus which is taught as part of the delivery of a range of sporting activities.
This week in PE, we have been focusing on building RESILIENCE when faced with difficult challenges. Determination, consistency and hard work all play a role in achieving our goals. In PE, each student will set individual goals depending on their abilities.
As a team sport, Netball players will come across difficult challenges when attempting to gain possession of the ball on court. This lesson, we looked at how we can successfully intercept the ball to gain possession. Resilience can be built by practicing consistently under pressure, adapting to opponents’ movements, and maintaining focus despite setbacks when attempting to defend the ball and the player. The Year 7s showed that they can practice within a technical drill, even when attempts are unsuccessful, to work through and encourage teamwork, learning from mistakes, and using targeted drills develop mental toughness and persistent defensive skills over time.
In a different setting, resilience can be developed in gymnastics when overcoming mental barriers to progress. Gradually increasing difficulty, visualising successful routines, and staying composed under pressure enhance both mental toughness and confidence.
Taking small steps towards progression provides students a sense of achievement when learning to reco
ver from falls and errors. Year 7 students transitioned from using a bench to executing a full run-up on trampettes, gradually overcoming physical challenges, learning from mistakes, and breaking through
mental barriers to build resilience and confidence.
Later in life, resilience supports adaptability in professional and personal settings, fosters a growth mindset and continuously strives toward their goals. As students progress throughout the years, we build on the skills they learn within PE and use these in wider life.
KS3 INTER HOUSE INDOOR 5-A-SIDE FOOTBALL
Inter House sports events are a great way to get students involved in some friendly competitive sport. It’s always great to see as many students as possible involved with all CDC groups represented.
Year 8
The first Inter House Indoor 5-a-side tournament was a very keenly contested event played in a great spirit. After the group games the combined ELM/ASH/OAK defeated SYCAMORE in a penalty shootout to qualify for the Final v the combined MAPLE/WILLOW team. The MAPLE/WILLOW team dominated the Final finally winning 4-0. Special mention and thanks to our Year 11 Sports Leaders, J Allan and L Fearnside, who refereed the matches. Final placing and points :

On Tuesday, after school Year 7 students embarked on their first opportunity to compete in some inter-house sport with the inter-house futsal tournament. In this competition, we had a handful of teams taking place and whilst a fiercely competitive tournament we saw teams battle it out to come away victorious. In the end, Oak came out as the winner of the tournament, Ash in second place and in third place was Elm/Beech.

Comment: On a brisk Monday afternoon, we ventured to Parmiters School for a Year 10 football match. In the game we started well, having a large amount of success down the right hand side of the pitch. We created several chances throughout the game and it paid off as we earned a penalty early on which N. Walters slotted home after we went down 1 – 0 early on from a strong finish into the bottom left corner from their player. Moving on, we got a corner and rather spectacularly M. Donnelly attempted a bicycle kick just inside and the penalty area which he made great contact with and it flew into the roof of the net making it 2 – 1, followed by a rather painful knee slide on astroturf. Moving into the second half, we came into our own, we continued to create a number of chances in the game, causing problems for Parmiters. K. Gibson was up next, receiving the ball at the back post and volleying home past the keeper. S. Ardeleanu then had his opportunity after making a darting run down the right hand side overlapping N. Walters and smashing the ball in at the near post. We then lost our concentration slightly and through some mistakes, we gifted Parmiters a chance to get back into the game. H. McManus was played in through a spectacular pass from H. Neal over the top which he chased and looped over the goalkeeper to make the score 5 – 2. Overall an excellent performance from all of those involved, well done.

Comment: An excellent performance from the Year 7 and 8 girls delivering an outstanding 7-0 football victory, showcasing excellent teamwork, resilience, and communication. The improvement in communication and team cohesion can be seen by the many goals scored. Their dedication and improving strategies throughout the match highlighted their hard work, with every player contributing to a dominant performance creating memorable victory. The lead allowed the players to move around the pitch in the second half, showcasing their individual strengths and working on their weaknesses ready for the next game. A truly impressive effort by the whole team! Well done girls and thank you to Miss Ayres for your continued support.

Comment: This was a very strong and impressive performance by the year 9 netball team . In the first quarter it was very close with us only edging ahead by one goal. With a calmer and determined attitude the girls created lots of space and defended very tight. By half time the girls were winning by 4 goals. In the second half they all raised their performance further and the final score was 22-10.

Comment: This was such a fantastic performance by all players. It was close throughout the game with only a couple of goals separating them at half time .With exceptional defending in the circle by A Gibson the opposition struggled to feed the shooters. Their best performance came in the last quarter when the girls worked incredibly hard to find space, defend and execute accurate passes . Their hard work was rewarded and they won by 3 goals.
Well done for a great win and strong performances by all.
BADMINTON success
Massive congratulations to J Muraj in Year 7 who last weekend won the Gold medal at the Badminton England Under 13 Bronze grade tournament. The tournament is open to all players in the country at county level which gives an indication of the scale of his achievement. Javadali also played in the doubles with him and his partner narrowly missing out on a medal. We look forward to hearing of Javadali’s future progress in the sport and congratulate him on his achievements so far.
PE kit
It is essential that students have the full correct PE kit for all lessons. This includes shinpads and black /yellow socks when participating in football lessons and also a pair of white sports socks for all other activities. Students will be reminded when activ
ities change. Students not bringing the correct kit will instantly receive consequence points.
Girls should be wearing plain black shorts which are longer than the length of their PE shirt or hoody. Leggings should be black sports leggings and not see through. Black tracksuit bottoms are also permitted.
ALL jewellery should be removed prior to the start of the lesson, including earrings, and hair should be tied up.
