PE CONCEPT of the Week: KNOWLEDGE – Rules (Head) Mrs Cartledge

The BMS PE and Health Faculty are committed to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle amongst the BMS student population. In addition we also aim to deliver a CONCEPT driven curriculum where the many varied aspects of the HEAD, HANDS, HEART assessment programme are delivered in lessons. Each week lessons have a CONCEPT focus which is taught as part of the delivery of a range of sporting activities. 

This week in PE, we have been focusing on the importance of KNOWLEDGE – RULES – specifically, understanding the rules of the game. The Year 8/9 and 10 students truly demonstrated this concept during the Inter-House Netball competitions, particularly in their understanding of positions on the court.

Netball requires players to be highly aware of their roles and positioning, and the players showed excellent knowledge of this aspect. They demonstrated a clear understanding of the designated areas for each position, ensuring they stayed within the correct zones and followed the rules governing player movement. Whether in attack or defence, the students were quick to adapt, maintaining good positioning to maximise their team’s effectiveness while respecting the boundaries of the game.

It was evident that their strong grasp of positions contributed to both their individual performances and overall team play. The Players worked seamlessly together, with players supporting one another by communicating and ensuring they followed the court’s positional structure. This understanding not only kept the matches fair and competitive but also created a more organised and fluid game.

What really stood out was how well the students adapted to the pressure of the competition while keeping their focus on the rules. Their application of knowledge in understanding court positions helped create a respectful and enjoyable environment for everyone involved.

Over the next few weeks the students will continue to strengthen their understanding of positions and rules, ensuring fair play and respect in all games we play. 

FOOTBALL

Year Senior Boys v Queens (County Plate) AWAY  Mr Cartledge

Date: Friday 22nd November 2024

Result: Lost 3-2

Comment: The Senior boys suffered a desperately disappointing injury time defeat against local rivals Queens in a game the boys deserved to win. The opening exchanges saw the BMS team play some excellent football and inside 10 minutes we were 2 goals in front with a good finish from K Larkin and a close range finish from a corner from J Gladdy. Some excellent counter attacking football saw the boys create a number of further chances in the first half without adding to the lead. The second half saw Queens gradually come back into the game and two goals in the last 20 minutes made for a tense finish. With the game looking like it was going to penalties a disputed late penalty was awarded to Queens which was converted to leave the the BMS team devastated to have lost a game they deserved to win.,

Result: Won 7-0

Comment:The boys responded to the disappointment of the defeat in the Cup on Friday by producing an excellent team performance to record a comfortable league win. The boys dominated possession throughout creating lots of chances and scoring some very good goals. District League success remains the target for the season with the boys currently top of the table.

NETBALL

Year 8 v The Grange  (District League Div 1) AWAY  Mrs Cooper 

Date: Monday 25th November 2024

Result: Lost

Comment: This was a tough game for the year 8 team. Whilst the game was close in the first half the second half saw The Grange build a convincing lead which despite their efforts the Bushey Meads team were unable to reduce.  There were positives to take from the game with some good defensive work and much improved footwork and game awareness and as always the girls never gave up working hard until the final whistle.

 

Year 9 v The Grange  (District League Div 1) AWAY  Mrs Cooper 

Date: Monday 25th November 2024

Result: Won 14-3

Squad: J.Isles, M.Hurtya, S.Verrey, A.Permeti, E.Yeboah, B-M.Barnard-Collins, Z.Chowdhury 

Commended performances: A.Permeti nominated by the opposition. E.Yeboah for great defensive play.

Comment: This was a dominant performance by the year 9 team who have a flurry of matches in the next couple of weeks. Having not played many competitive games this season it took a while for the girls to get into the game and put their training efforts into practice. Some fantastic work around the circle from A.Permeti and S.Verrey saw lots of chances created and converted by M.Hurtya and J.Isles to give the BMS team an unassailable lead at half time. With a switch around by the opposition the defensive end of B-M. Barnard-Collins, E.Yeboah and Z.Chowdhury were a bit busier in the second half but some great interceptions and superior passing ensured the team stayed well ahead. Well played ladies, an impressive performance against a team we have lost to in previous seasons. 

 

PE kit

It is essential that students have the full correct PE kit for all lessons. This includes shinpads and black /yellow socks when participating in football lessons and also a pair of white sports socks for all other activities. Students will be reminded when activities change. Students not bringing the correct kit will instantly receive consequence points.

Girls should be wearing plain black shorts which are longer than the length of their PE shirt or hoody. Leggings should be black sports leggings and not see through.  Black tracksuit bottoms are also permitted.

ALL jewellery should be removed prior to the start of the lesson, including earrings, and hair should be tied up.
